The Organ Builder Schulze Family - a Famous Dynasty in Thuringia
Imagine hearing the sound of an organ built by a family that worked in Thuringia for over 200 years. The Organ Builder Schulze Family was one of the most renowned and innovative in Germany and Europe. They created more than 100 masterpieces of the organ art that still resonate in churches and concert halls to this day. Here are some exciting facts about their history:
- It all began with Hans Heinrich Schulze, who lived in Solsdorf in the 17th century and was the first organ builder of the family. His sons Elias and Johann Heinrich Schulze followed in his footsteps and were also skilled as carpenters.
- The grandson of Hans Heinrich Schulze, Johann Daniel Schulze, moved the company headquarters from Solsdorf to Milbitz in 1750. He was the father of Johann Andreas Schulze, who held the title "Fürstlich schwarzburgischer und gräflich priviligierter Orgelbauer". He built, among other things, the organ for the St. Marien Church in Stadtilm.
- The son of Johann Andreas Schulze, Johann Friedrich Schulze, was the most famous organ builder in the family. In 1826, he moved the company headquarters from Milbitz to Paulinzella and built more than 100 organs in Germany, England, Scotland, and Russia. He is considered alongside Eberhard Friedrich Walcker as the most productive and advanced German organ builder of his time. He built, among other things, the organs for the Cathedral in Merseburg, St. Marien Church in Rudolstadt, and the Castle Church in Altenburg.
- Johann Friedrich Schulze had four sons: Edmund, Bernhard Oskar, Eduard, and Herwart Schulze. They continued the business under the name "J. F. Schulzes Söhne" and also built numerous organs in Germany and abroad. Edmund Schulze was the most significant of them and built, among other things, the organs for St. Paul's Cathedral in London and St. Nikolai Church in Hamburg. Adolph Oskar Schulze was the son of Edmund Schulze and the last organ builder of the family. He died in 1916 in Paulinzella without descendants.
The Organ Builder Schulze Family has left an impressive mark on the history of music. Their organs are characterized by a powerful and diverse sound that combines both baroque and romantic elements. If you want to hear one of their organs, you can visit the Paulinzella Monastery Ruins, where the former residence of the family is located.
