Schalkenmehren is a beautiful and well-known tourist resort with about 600 inhabitants at an altitude of about 450 metres, located directly on the Schalkenmehrener Maar (crater lake). In addition to the many water sports facilities, swimming, fishing, boating, etc., you will find a variety of beautiful hiking trails around the lakes and in the region. One of the most beautiful cycle paths in Germany, the Maare - Mosel cycle path (former railway line to the Mosel), leads directly past Schalkenmehren. Bicycles can be hired cheaply in the village. There are also a large number of good restaurants and cafés in the town in various categories. There are good shopping facilities in Schalkenmehren and Daun. The distance to Daun is 5 km.other sports and leisure activities : Excursions and leisure activities:The Volcanic Eifel is particularly famous for its many maars (crater lakes). The 3 "Dauner Maare" are located directly in the village (Schalkenmehrener Maar) or approx. 2 to 3 km away (Weinfelder- and Gemündener Maar). The maars are known as the "eyes of the Eifel". Some of them are bathing lakes with very good water sports facilities and boat hire (e.g. Schalkenmehrener Maar, Gemündener or Pulvermaar), but they are also very well-known nature conservation and hiking areas. The Moselle is not far away. We recommend a trip to Cochem, Traben-Trarbach, Bernkastel or Trier, the oldest city in Germany. The neighbouring countries of Luxembourg, Belgium and France are also well worth a visit. The world-famous Nürburgring with its wide range of events and leisure facilities is very popular with visitors. Or visit one of the countless castles and palaces in the region. Other excursion destinations: Various animal parks, observatory, bell foundry, beekeeping, the volcano museum in Daun, the Maar museum in Manderscheid, volcano house and volcano adventure trail in Strohn, geo-route, geological excursions, adventure park, visit to the Eifel Nature Park, etc. The Eifel is also very well known for its artists and writers. The successful Eifel crime novels are particularly popular. The Eifel crime thriller festival "Tatort Eifel" attracts many visitors to Daun and the region time and again. Cyclists get their money's worth in the Vulkaneifel. A former railway line has been converted into one of the most popular cycle paths in Germany: The Maare-Mosel cycle path leads from Daun to the Moselle. The return journey can also be made by bus (with bike trailer). The Kosmos cycle path from Daun to Meerfeld is new and also very popular. There are also some of the most beautiful mountain bike trails in Germany in the Volcanic Eifel, which is a true paradise for hikers. Two well-known hiking trails are the Lieserpfad and the Eifelsteig.Further tips for your leisure time: Summer toboggan run, balloon rides, hang-gliding and ultra-light flights, sightseeing flights with gliders or sports planes, paragliding, thermal, adventure, indoor or heated outdoor pools, wellness oases, surfing, minigolf, golf, Nordic walking, fishing, bowling, squash, tennis, badminton, archery, climbing rocks, fitness centres, racing and rally sports, karting, horse riding, horse riding, cinema centre in Daun, steam locomotive and train rides, boat trips on the Moselle, wine tasting on the Moselle, visiting monasteries and Roman sites, covered wagon rides, amusement parks and children's leisure parks nearby, fossil hunting, exploring caves and ice caves, visiting waterfalls and much more.and much more.
